History of the W111

The W111 Fintail emerged from Mercedes-Benz's desire to modernize its mid-range sedan lineup with contemporary design and improved comfort.

Introduced in 1959, the Fintail featured distinctive rear tailfins that became its defining characteristic, alongside a more spacious interior and updated suspension technology. The design was influenced by American automotive trends while maintaining Mercedes' traditional engineering excellence.

Throughout the 1960s, the W111 received several updates including more powerful engines and refined styling details, establishing itself as a favorite among discerning owners. The model competed directly with BMW's 1500 series and became a status symbol in Europe and beyond.

Production continued until 1968 when the more modern W114 platform succeeded the Fintail, though the W111 had already sold nearly 900,000 units globally. The Fintail's longevity and popularity established it as one of Mercedes-Benz's most successful models of the era.
